Join us for an intimate Friday evening concert featuring a supremely talented lineup of Ruby musicians: Ellie Barber, Saideh Eftekhari, Claire Calderón (Coraza), and Flora Mendoza. We’ll enjoy drinks and snacks at our usual Happy Hour and a Half then kick off the show at 6:30pm. Free for members. Donations at the door for non-members. Tipping always encouraged!
About the Musicians:
Ellie Barber’s career as a musician started young, when she sang before she could talk. Raised as a classical cellist, Ellie gradually discovered the power of songwriting and has since morphed into singing and cello-ing at the same time in Americana-folk bands. Her playing has been featured on 88.3 KDNK and 91.5 KJAX/Aspen Public Radio, in documentaries selected for the Sundance and Colorado Environmental Film Festivals, and on recordings with other artists, including Grammy-winning artist Peter Kater. You can find her most recent project, Pearl & Wood, on all streaming services.
Saideh Eftekhari is a multi-instrumentalist (violin, setar, voice), teaching artist and sound healing practitioner based in San Francisco. Her work is inspired by the years she spent studying and living in Latin America, the Middle East and Europe. She is trained in classical violin as well as the Persian setar and holds a certification in Sound Healing from the California Institute of Integral Studies. She frequently collaborates with Khatch Khatchadourian, creating a unique blend of contemplative music spanning Armenian, Persian and Arabic musical traditions. Claire Calderón (of Coraza): Coraza is a feminist indie folk-pop group based in Oakland, CA. With roots in Chile, Guam, Mexico, and the Philippines, Gala’s sound is a unique fusion of experimental and traditional; nostalgic and provocative, combining elements of South American folkloric style (à la Violeta Parra and Mercedes Sosa) with catchy contemporary rhythms, bilingual lyrics, electric distortions, and delicious harmonies. Find them on instagram at @coraza_theband.
Flora Mendoza, mezzo soprano, has sung with the various ensembles, including the San Francisco Symphony Chorus, Capella SF, the San Francisco Opera Guild, Phenix Opera Company, Lamplighters Music Theatre, Opera Cultura, and Capella SF since relocating to the Bay Area from New York City 5 years ago. She studied at Yale University and NYU. She currently resides in Oakland and is the lead singer for a new pop chamber group, Ashcans of the Mind.
NOTE: This event is co-ed but the Ruby always prioritizes the safety and well-being of women and nonbinary folks. All attendees must pre-register on eventbrite. No walk-ins.
