[IRL] Cookbook Club: ICE CREAM TRAVEL GUIDE by Jennifer Ng

The Ruby’s Cookbook Club is a combination potluck and book club. Participants should each plan to make enough to taste and share (suggested amount: two 32-oz soup containers worth).

We'll be making from and discussing Ice Cream Travel Guide by our very own, Jennifer Ng.

Jennifer's kickstarter-backed book project, part global ice cream adventure map, part gastronomic memoir with delicious recipes, was profiled in KQED's Food section!

We have a well-thumbed copy of Jennifer's book for reference at the front desk! UPDATE! Jennifer has made it possible for the first 3 people to RSVP to get their own copy of her book! There will be a few copies available for purchase at the front desk as well.

Sign up sheet here so we don't all make the same ice cream (although, what a delicious dilemma). We'll also have extra ice cream makers at the Ruby if you don't have one! Email staff@therubysf.com to coordinate your use!

Like our past fundraiser with Michelle Polzine and BAKING AT THE 20TH CENTURY CAFE , we're combining this cookbook club with a fundraiser and happy hour later that day with our pals, York Street Coffee! Please come to both if you can!

About ICE CREAM TRAVEL GUIDE

A worldwide guide to ice cream destinations, a collection of stories, and inspired recipes based on 60 ice cream shops across eight countries. From California to Taiwan to Argentina to Italy. Jennifer Ng, a lifelong ice cream lover, chronicles visits to a dairy plant, the island where ice cream supposedly originated, and conversations with ice cream makers. She meets former pastry chefs, Gelato University students, and fellow ice cream lovers. Jennifer seeks to answer the question: why is ice cream so special for so many of us?

About Jennifer Ng

Sugar addict. Traveler. Ice cream lover. Writer.

Ice cream is my answer to everything. Rewards, consolations, and socializing are always good reasons to have a scoop of ice cream. From experimenting with ice cream flavors for regular ice cream socials to bringing visitors to ice cream shops across my hometown of San Francisco, I am on a journey to chronicle ice cream destinations across the world for an ice cream travel guide.

For many years, I designed products to delight and pleasantly surprise users of mobile phones and tablets. Like design, ice cream is a happiness business. Yet the question remained: Why is this frozen confection so popular with all ages? Why do people work in this business? And most importantly, does ice cream delight across all countries and cultures?

Health, Safety, and Accessibility

We'll be tasting and discussing outside on the Ruby deck. Masks are recommended but not mandatory while inside the Ruby. We'll have KN95s for everybody who would like one and we will ask all non-members for proof of vaccination at the door. Ruby members themselves are required to be vaccinated so they've already been checked.

Regrettably, we have a staircase that leads up to the space we will be tasting but we're happy to help with hauling things up the stairs and supporting anyone with accessibility needs.

Please contact staff@therubysf.com if we can be of support.
