[This is a Virtual Ruby* event taking place over Zoom. Nonmembers are welcome to join; please donate if you are able!]
Let’s watch and talk about films by women and nonbinary filmmakers! The Ruby's movie series, which we are calling The Glittering Cave, will serve as a platform for thinking about what it means to make and watch films with a gender-identity perspective.
In light of the shelter-in-place and solidarity with our community's health, we'll take The Glittering Cave #6 online. We'll watch Joanna Hogg's "The Souvenir" (2019), available on Kanopy (register with your SFPL card) and/or Amazon Prime Video. Who doesn't want to escape into an autobiographical British artist-coming-of-age story with Tilda Swinton? After watching the film on your own, we'll have a virtual discussion [Join the Zoom meeting here: https://zoom.us/j/727448398]. At the next Glittering Cave we'll continue to look at ill-fated love with the wistful and gothic The Atlantics (2019, Mati Diop, who was the first black woman to direct a film featured in the Cannes film festival).
If you'd like to catch up, we've watched:
Cleo from 5 to 7 (1962)
The Watermelon Woman (1996)
The Love Witch (2016)
Shirkers (2019)
Grace Jones: Bloodlight and Bami (2017)
In order to talk about films, we’ll watch them regularly and devise novel ways to respond and spark discussion. Screenings could be linked by theme/question, or by maker. There may be guest visits and/or screening by local filmmakers. There may be an online blog, physical zine, or more slow-burning criticism/writing that honors what transpires at our meetings. The goal is to enlist multi-talented Rubies to learn something new about film as a community.
