Learn to embroider a gift for a loved one for the holidays! Ruby member and Workshop SF instructor Emma McGowan will show examples from around the world and give a brief history of embroidery in the West, and how this domestic art has become, for many, a feminist practice. In this class, we'll learn embroidery basics: four stitches and how to transfer a pattern. And we'll learn how to monogram or personalize a gift for a loved one! No previous embroidery experience required! Bring the item that you'd like to personalize (this should be a non-stretchy,, woven fabric, i.e. linen or not stretchy cotton or denim.)
PLEASE NOTE: Materials fee is $25, payable at the start of class. Nonmembers, this is included in the price of your ticket.
About Emma McGowan
Emma McGowan comes from a family of craftswomen and has been fascinated by needlework for years, but she didn’t actually learn how to do it herself until she traveled to Guatemala and was blown away by the handiwork done by Mayan women. So she bought a hoop, some thread, a needle, and taught herself how to make her own beautiful designs. When Emma is not embroidering, you can find her writing about feminist issues, reading (a lot), sewing outlandish clothing, and experimenting with new crafts projects.
